Do you refer to the little pictures like e.g. the "mod" symbol? To make them reveal their secret mouse over them slowly ;-)
They cannot be uploaded on one's own, but they are assigned by the head moderator.
Additionally, further details on variations of the members' symbol can be found in the description of the intro forum of the course. This is maybe what you already "saw somewhere".
