Dear Readers,

please use this thread to discuss Chapter 1. Magic and Qabbalah!

Shalom
Salomo Baal-Shem

P.S. Please to not comment unless you have thoroughly read the chapter concerned. (We do not want any religious missionary to tell us that all magic is evil and forbidden in the Bible unless they can argue on a philosophical level AND have read the book. If you have not read this chapter and do not know its contents it is obviously pointless to comment or discuss it with us here.)

I've wondered at the condemnation of magic in the Bible, as when I considered things more objectively (without the doctrine I grew up with) I clearly saw Magic.  It seemed to me that elevating one's self in order to manipulate or bewitch was the wrong path.  But effective prayer to heal, help or do good was also Magic and completely acceptable.  Chapter 1 seemed confirming to me.

In Light,

Having just read Chapter 1 I would agree that magic within the Bible is poorly defined and also confused by the use of words such as sorceress. Further to this I would also suggest that the continued editing and incorrect translation to English of terms used also compounds the difficulties associated with how magic is interpreted or viewed within the Bible.

I found the classifucation of Magic by the Talmud into three categories interesting. Those being Magic against the divine will, Magic sympathetic to the divine will and Magic as an illusion or entertainment. I am in particular curious as to where/how magic that goes against the divine will can be achieved. Ie from where is the power being drawn if not the divine will?

Hi Mark,

thank you for your impressions on the book!

"I am in particular curious as to where/how magic that goes against the divine will can be achieved. Ie from where is the power being drawn if not the divine will?"

e.g. from their own imbalanced emotions such as anger or hate. The Divine Will gives us our own free will so we can decide what we wish to achieve.
