How to Respectfully Study Qabbalah

How to Respectfully Study Qabbalah

While I am not Jewish, there are Jewish members in my family, and I have a long-held interest in Jewish culture and religion.

When approaching the study of Qabbalah as a non-Jew, I want to be respectful. For example, handling books and notes containing Holy Names, not putting them in the trash or taking them to the bathroom.

There are stories about very pious qabbalists who would only study Qabbalah after taking a ritual bath.

While I suspect the latter might be taking it very far even within the context of Judaism, I'm still interested in learning some "dos and don'ts".

How do other students here approach the studies? What do the teaching staff recommend? If Jews are encouraged to have a good grounding in Talmud before studying Qabbalah, should non-Jews be likewise members in good standing of their respective religions, and have good working knowledge of their religious teachings? How about observance of precepts or commandments, regular prayers or other rituals, and the like?

Hello Cantabo,

glad to hear about your background.

"When approaching the study of Qabbalah as a non-Jew, I want to be respectful. For example, handling books and notes containing Holy Names, not putting them in the trash or taking them to the bathroom."

yes, I agree with you.

You asked very good questions!

Maybe our new webinar series might be of interest to you? I can well imagine that some of the questions you asked will be addressed therein, and many more ;-)
