Greetings Vex,
As to your question of Bible versions, the One that I find most useful is the Tanakh. This is the Torah or the Law, the Nevi'im or the books of the Prophets, and the Ketuvim simply titled the writings. most Hebrew Tanakh's are written in both Hebrew and English, which if you can read Hebrew is very helpful. Also most people find that the Tanakh is not subject to "as many" mistranlations or typographical errors.
I sincerely hope that I have helped you in some way, and I leave you with a piece of advice. try to read the Torah using the system of PARDES
The word PARDES [the Garden] is a sign for 4 levels of interpretation of Torah
a] P'shat - the simple meaning of the verse or story.
b] Remez - a hint of something else in the story - a message that if one looks for will be found
c] Drash - to explain by way of analogy ... a spiritual concept into its physical counterpart - a challenge to the reader to look for it.
d] Sod - a code that is hidden until it is revealed
For the level of Sod one must read the Torah in the light of the books of the Zohar.
Once again I hope you find this helpful and may you forever walk in the Light.
