Almost four centuries ago the Caribbean became a major haven for the recruitment of slaves from Africa. Coming from mostly West Africa these ancient peoples brought their knowledge, culture and religion with them. Indeed, there came a number of wise men and women who were priests, shamans and healers who retained the ancient ways of worship and communion with the ancestors and the gods.
In contemporary Caribbean society much of these ways have been forgotten, however among the religious groups of the Spiritual Baptists and practitioners of the Ifa tradition, commonly called the Orishas such practices and teachings continue.
In this weekend workshop we are going to explore, the teachings, beliefs and magical practices of the Caribbean people with specific focus on the rites of the islands of Trinidad and Tobago.
We shall explore the Orisha deities and their significance, the meaning of the Ori in Orisha worship and also recognition of the Ancestors from an African context.
Various techniques of protection, cleansing, purification and blessing will be shared with participants.
The weekend’s work will culminate with a rite which focuses on giving honour and recognition to our ancestors, those who have sacrificed so dearly that we may live with greater awareness of our inherent spirituality.
